“Soldier of Fortune” magazine, published by Omega Group Ltd, is a monthly magazine was founded by (Ret) Lt. Colonel Robert K. Brown who was a Green Beret and has served in Vietnam. The controversies!
Soldier of Fortune Magazine subscription was initially said to be for teenage and pre-teen boys providing them with a fantasy but soon it created vivid interest and became favorites of right wingers as well as the Vietnam veterans for whom this became a window to relieve their past glories. In the 1980s with its peaking circulation it propagated in a way a number of copy cat magazines. There have been controversies regarding the classified advertisement in this magazine. On multiple occasions the magazine had faced lawsuits regarding the contents in this section which were in reality classified advertisements for mercenary work. As a consequence (after the civil suit regarding conspiracy of murder of Richard Braun was settled at 200,000$ on 1992) these advertisements have been stopped.
Anti communist?
The Soldier of Fortune Magazine is observed not just to take a neutral stance. It had taken a stand regarding various critical controversial topics in United States military. In mid 1980s it had been critical of James Gordon “Bo” Gritz’s not so successful attempts of rescuing “POW MIA”s from south-east Asia. The standpoint of the magazine regarding role of women in combat in armed services, changes of cultural systems in military, up gradation of weapon system, regulation of firearms, and cuts in budget stands out. This reflects the countless soldiers who write letters to the magazine’s editorial staff, unraveling points of view and voices that does not come out through official military publications. It is also observed to be unfalteringly anti-communist.
The militia movement
On 1994 Soldier of Fortune Magazine helped to debunk the militia movement and its related personalities like Mark Koernke and Linda Thompson. It got its first prestigious journalism award for its coverage of the Waco tragedy. It also debunked conspiracies and their propagators about establishment of a ‘new world order’ (UN taking over United States). It provides a continuous coverage from areas of military activity like Iraq, Afghanistan. Soldier of Fortune brings detailed and in depth coverage of otherwise inaccessible areas of military activity due to its method of reportage. The magazine’s practices the tradition of participatory journalism. It is known to send its reporters into most dangerous and obscure areas of military activities. There are records where its employees have come in harm’s way and it has lost two of its editors in the process. The magazine is also known to seek reports from stringers in the areas concerned. Their method of reporting makes them a handy source of information for the intelligence at times, although reliability of information for something as crucial is often subject of further investigation.
Conclusion
The Soldier of Fortune Magazine subscription gives its readers coverage of African warfare much more intimately than most other publications. The involvement of mercenaries in this case makes it possible for them to come up with much more details. Soldier of Fortune caters its readers with direct, real life and ‘from the field’ stories. Soldier of Fortune Magazine subscription is generally banned in prisons due to its content being violent to an extent that is at times unreasonable.
